Having taken some time out after the Project Airbus A380, and before getting back into POSKY 777s and various other projects, here’s a one-off that’s been requested by a number of people (not that I take requests of course…):
For Airbus fans this should be a big one (literally). After huge anticipation, we’ve now released the Project Airbus A380! Here’s the announcement…
Greetings all,
It’s our pleasure to announce that, as of a few moments ago, the long awaited Project Airbus A380 is available for download on the AVSIM library! After over 2 years of development time and several hundreds of hours of work by all involved, we’ve set it loose to be enjoyed by the community. It’s our wish that she lives up to expectations and provides you, the end user, with countless hours of enjoyment.
The model is made entirely in Gmax and was compiled using the FS2004 SDK. It should perform reasonably well, though is slightly heavier than our A320 series. While it should be mostly compatible with FSX, we promise no support for any issues you may encounter.
Official paints were packaged as standalone aircraft containers, and contain only the wing-view models. The virtual cabin models will be released shortly as a separate download, while the paint kit will only be released after all the official liveries are up. Both RR and EA engines have been modeled.
The final features list is as follows:
- dynamic wingflex with input from several new parameters including ground spoilers, fuel load, and angle of attack
- control surface droop when the engines are off
- independent parallel bogies when on the ground
- custom tire rotation code
- animated pack vents
- idle-reverser animation
- ground spoilers
- smoothed gear and flap animations
- customized nosewheel steering animation
- accurate aileron LAF simulation
- custom coded engine fan start-up and shutdown animations
- windmilling engine fans (including fan inertia)
- transparent fan blades at high RPM
- improved antenna hiding method
- animated window wipers
- dynamic probe sensors
- hard coded “double strobes”
We’ll update this thread with download links as they become available.
On behalf of the entire Project Airbus Team, thank you for your continued support and feedback!
Best regards,
– The PA team: Demetris Themistocleous, Derek Mayer, Sheldon Fernandes, Tom Collins, Alexis Vletsas
A couple of weeks ago I took advantage of Air France flying their A380 to London Heathrow on weekends this summer. Aside from a fantastic weekend with friends in Paris, the excitement and novelty of flying on the huge aircraft won’t be hard to forget.
I couldn’t get over how quiet she was once we got off the ground – and very smooth too. I was in seat 85B outbound (upper deck) and 51L on the return (right at the back downstairs).
A few shots for you; firstly a couple that made it onto airliners.net:

Sorry it’s been so long since the last update. That’s not to say that nothing’s been going on in the meantime!
As you may well know the Project Airbus A380 has been rapidly approaching completion, with the base textures now all but finished and my liveries done; here are some latest previews:

In the meantime, there’s been some progress on the POSKY 777s, mostly by Dhruv (see below for primer paint addition) and Kyle (I’ll try to find some previews of his work so far).

And finally some other paints for her that I’ve been working on:
Following a brief period of hibernation, we’ve recently decided to get things back in action and resume work on the A380. Being that we don’t work with deadlines, no release date has been (or will be) set.
We would like to thank every one of our supporters and those who have not lost faith in our group. We are aware there were a lot of foul talk doing the round and a lot of people who wrote us off as well as trash-talked as to the reason we decided to take our time-off. Dare we say that this project and where it stands today – is testimony to the fact that we did exactly what we said – take time off and do it on our own terms. As simple as that.
We appreciate everyone’s interest in this project and in our group, however we will not be able to cater to any specific requests for additions to the features. We will do all that we can to make this to the best of our abilities but we have reached a freeze on systems and features for the model. So we’d appreciate if there are no posts made on this aspect or messages sent asking for changes.
Even though the original plans were to be more elaborate, we are extremely happy to have a wonderful team together and talent in doing what we have managed to do with this so far.
The A380 will be released for FS9, but similarly to the A320 series, it should be perfectly compatible with FSX.
The exterior model is made entirely in GMAX. As always, the focus was put on accuracy and performance, Fuselage cross-sections, wing profiles/airfoils, hundreds of videos/pictures, and whatever other references we could find were all used to this end, while a texture layout similar to the A320 series’ keeps it running smoothly on lower-end systems.
The model features more custom (XML) animations than previous releases, some examples being:
Improved wing-flex effect. The wings react better to G-loads, ground spoilers flex them downwards on landing, wings droop more or less depending on fuel load
Typical control surface droop when the engines are off (including rudders)
Parallel bogies when on the ground, taking into account that when the aircraft is pitched upwards, the outer-main gears hang freely
Animated pack vents
Idle-reverser animation
Ground spoilers on the ground (including ailerons)
Accurate nosewheel movement. The nosewheel steering deflects progressively less at higher roll speeds, and should the aircraft come to a stop in mid-turn, the nosewheel retains its heading (as it should) and doesn’t automagically come back to centre
Windmilling engine fans. The fans react to oncoming airflow, be it due to wind or airspeed. Fan inertia is also modeled
New method of hiding unwanted antennas. They will no longer be hidden via the alpha channel, thereby avoiding the “fuselage holes” issue in FSX SP2
Animated window wipers in rain and snow
Animated nose and AoA sensors
The model will also feature accurate Airbus “double strobes” on the wings, many opening doors, opening cargo bays (including the bulk cargo), accurate gear extension/retraction sequences, transparent fan blades at high RPM, detailed flap and reverser mechanisms, etc.
The virtual cockpit model will be released after the wingview model, once the panel is complete.
I’ll finish off a few of those Overland 777s soon (including the AA livery in the post below), but I’ve kicked off a new project with Dhruv Kalra (of XP Jets fame) to start a new base texture set and package of liveries for the fantastic freeware Project Open Sky 777v2. Here’s a preview of the fuselage…
